George Washington’s Birthday
George’s father died when he was 11 years old. As a result of the “family’s reduced circumstances,” George received limited formal education, perhaps seven or eight years with a private tutor. Lacking training in Greek, Latin and the law, young Washington felt rather self conscious and inadequate.
However, with “steady application, he had learned to write in a clear, strong hand and to express himself on paper with force and clarity.” (p.44)
In addition to beautiful penmanship,George Washington cultivated impeccable manners, a love of dancing, and a deep respect for anyone he shared time and space with.
