As a catalog shopper, I’ve discovered several very affordable, portable writing desks for sale.  I bought the “Laplander” (shown below) for myself two years ago and I love it.

Levenger’s “Laplander”

It weighs just over 2 pounds, has a soft cushion underneath to rest on your lap, and elastic straps to hold pens and notes.  The handle makes the desk “ready to go” anywhere-anytime!  The clip on light is useful but not necessary.
