While listening to NPR on my morning commute, I heard about Warren Buffet’s contest for kids: Grow Your Own Business…and his Secret Millionaires’ Club. (The later is his cartoon series where he imparts valuable financial lessons to kids.)
Nearly 4000 kids, ages 7 to 16 submitted their entrepreneurial ideas for a chance to win the grand prize of $5000. and an opportunity to meet Warren Buffet.
Well, this year’s individual Grand Prize winner is Matthew Meyer, a 10 year old boy from Cincinnati, Ohio. His invention The “Right Writer” is an elastic aide to help one hold a pen/pencil correctly! It was prompted by Matthew’s need to improve his own handwriting. Matthew describes his process…
“I created the Write-Right to help me ‘brain train’ how to hold my pencil correctly,” Matthew explains. “‘Brain Training’ is learning how to do something the right way. I hated to write, and part of that was because it hurt my hand and arm. I have learning problems that makes spelling, handwriting and writing my thoughts down very hard. I also was embarrassed because my handwriting was ugly. I used the Right-Writer for two months whenever I wrote, and now my handwriting is so much better.”
May 24, 2013…
I am so thrilled about this young boy’s invention to improve his handwriting. It gives me hope that handwriting is still considered important, and even Warren Buffet thinks so!
