What a joy it is to discover A.R. Gurney’s play: “Love Letters” is being performed on Broadway, starring Mia Farrow and Brian Dennehy. It opened just last Thursday and will feature a rotating cast of stars.
I saw this play performed at The James Blackstone Memorial Library back in 2011, and have been gushing about it ever since. Of course, it is a tribute to letter writing, and it clearly illustrates the heartfelt magic pen can create on paper.
The letters between Andy and Melissa begin in grammar school and continue throughout their lives. It is a lifelong’ love story expressed in letters.
The simplicity of the set featuring the two solitary characters reading their letters to each other, brings the words to the foreground and allows the silences to speak volumes as well.
In this day of constant, often shallow, digital connection, Love Letters stands out as a witness to the depth and power of old fashioned letter writing.
