Last Friday, 44 New Haven city letter carriers were acknowledged by The National Safety Council for a minimum of 30 years with a safe driving record. That sets the criteria for The Million Mile Club.
At first, I took it literally, and wondered: “If the truck clocked 1,000,000 miles, how many miles did my feet walk?” I’d estimate 3 to 5 times what the truck drove. With that thought in mind, I decided to honor Mr. Zip to symbolize the walking aspect of the job.
All in all, it was a pleasant ceremony which lasted about an hour. We were each given a plaque and a pin, with lots of photos taken. (Thanks to Lisa Landone.) There was food and refreshments. However, I had to race like Mr. Zip to catch up in the office after it was over. “No rest for the weary.”
