Calligraphy literally means beautiful writing. What is displayed in the exquisite penmanship and design of The Graceful Envelopes is what is “traditional” calligraphy.
Yet graffiti can also be calligraphic. Yes, much of it can be a statement of angst and protest. However, many street artists are extremely creative, talented draftsmen. How they control the stream of color from spray paint cans is both wondrous and ingenious. There are several marvelous murals in the New Haven area that showcase amazing skill and expansive imagination.
One such local location is under the 91 Interstate highway overpass, literally labelled “The Under 91 Project.” It is located on Humphery Street, between State and East Streets.
This mural was painted in 2014 (exactly 2 years ago). I am still wowed by the imagery and vastness of it.
Today, some of the paint has faded and chipped off, and the weeds are framing the edges. I took a few photos to document some of the calligraphy and imagery. Then, I discovered this video of the work in process.
I’m sure you will enjoy watching how it came to be.
