Kids write letters to Santa. They also write letters to Pope Francis. With “Dear Santa,” they generally have a list of stuff they’d like to own. With “Dear Pope Francis” they look for answers to “make sense of the world.”
Regardless of how you feel about religion, Pope Francis is a unique spiritual leader. He transcends boundaries to reach out to all people, everywhere. Francis has deep respect and love for children. So it is no surprise why this collection of 31 letters with Francis’ answers is such a bestseller.
“These questions are tough, ” Pope Francis commented when he first got these letters. The children asked questions like- “Do our deceased relatives see us from heaven?” “Why are people poor and have no food?” “Do bad people have guardian angels?” “Do you like to dance, and play soccer?”
Each letter came with a drawing. Since the child was not in front of him, Francis looked at the artwork and spoke simply from his heart. He admits he liked to dance, tango even. He was never very good at soccer, but likes the game anyway. He explains that those who have died smile on us from above. They do watch over us. Those who have plenty do not want to share which is why some folks go hungry. They need to learn how to be generous. And yes, everyone has a guardian angel, but some people don’t listen to them. Still they have an angel…always.
Sometimes Pope Francis answers the children with religious imagery, but that is his language. Underlining all his answers, his words speak kindness and goodwill towards all people.
