“We turn not older with years, but new everyday.” Emily Dickinson

Today is Emily Dickinson’s birthday. A recluse all her life, she wrote profusely some 1,800 poems and hundreds of letters. Her correspondence was her primary way of connecting with people. She often sent poems to her friends with a letter. Yet, she was little known during her lifetime. Her style was bold, highly personal, and utterly unique. Her use of grammar was totally her own. Thus editing her work would have been quite difficult and risked impairing the poem’s meaning. Only after her death was her poetry published. Today Emily Dickinson is considered to be “one of the most important figures in American poetry.”

“Forever is composed of nows.”
