As the anniversary of 9/11/01 approaches, I recall the spontaneous shrines the families and friends of the victims erected to honor their loved ones and give expression to their enormous grief. Many images contained handwritten notes with drawings and photos. Many were love letters, thank you notes, and goodbyes. Some wrote prayers for hope and courage.
