Today was the National Day of Action for USPS postal employees. NALC President Fredric Rolando called upon the letter carriers across the country to come out and protest Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe’s plan to end Saturday mail delivery.
I joined approximately 200 people, mostly letter carriers, on the New Haven Green at noon today. We are lucky to have legislators in this state and district who are quite supportive of postal workers and working class families. The luminaries present were Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. Blumenthal stated that he would like to put the Postmaster General “behind bars!” And Rosa, who is a strong friend to the local NALC, promised to fight to ” keep mail delivery on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and SATURDAY!” She vowed to protect the 22,000 Connecticut jobs that rest in the balance.
As she was leaving the Green, I personally thanked her for her efforts and mentioned that she really has the spirit to rally the masses, Rosa immediately fired back: “Oh, you have the fire in the belly to make this happen.”
